Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 8 minutes
Total Time 18 minutes
Servings: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • Hot dogs: 8 beef, pork, turkey, or plant-based hot dogs
  • Buns: 8 hot dog buns (classic, brioche, or whole wheat)
  • Optional crisping oil: 1 teaspoon neutral oil or cooking spray
  • Mustard (yellow, Dijon, or spicy brown)
  • Ketchup
  • Relish (sweet or dill)
  • Chopped onions (raw or caramelized)
  • Sauerkraut or pickled jalapeños
  • Shredded cheddar or pepper jack
  • Chili (canned or homemade)
  • Coleslaw
  • Diced tomatoes and chopped scallions
  • Mayonnaise or special sauce
  • Sport peppers or banana peppers
  • Everything bagel seasoning or celery salt

Method

  1. Preheat the air fryer: Set it to 390°F (200°C) for 3–5 minutes. A hot basket helps get that crisp skin.
  2. Prep the hot dogs: Make 3–4 shallow diagonal slashes on each hot dog or prick lightly with a fork. This prevents bursting and helps the heat get inside.
  3. Optional oil: Lightly rub or spray the hot dogs with oil for extra blistering. It’s not required, but it does boost texture.
  4. Air fry: Arrange hot dogs in a single layer. Cook for 5–7 minutes, shaking once halfway. For extra char, add 1–2 more minutes.
  5. Toast the buns: Open the buns and place them in the basket cut-side up. Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for 1–2 minutes until lightly toasted.
  6. Set up the toppings bar: While the hot dogs cook, arrange toppings in small bowls with spoons and tongs. Keep cold items chilled and warm items (like chili) heated.
  7. Assemble and serve: Add hot dogs to toasted buns and let everyone build their own. Serve immediately for the best snap and warmth.
